Do You Need Licensed Security for a Private Event in Ontario?

If you are charging admission, serving alcohol, or hosting a large gathering, the short answer is usually yes. Here is what actually applies.

If you are planning an event in Ontario and wondering whether you legally need licensed security, the short answer is usually yes. If you are charging admission, serving alcohol, or hosting a large gathering, the law has clear requirements, and most venues will not let an unlicensed guard work the door. Here is what actually applies.

In Ontario, security work is governed by the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, known as PSISA. Under that law, anyone who performs security work for pay must hold a valid security guard licence. That includes the people checking IDs at your door, managing your guest list, watching the floor, and handling anyone who needs to be removed. If they are being paid to do a security job, they need to be licensed.

It does not matter if they are a friend helping out or someone you found last minute. "They are just working the door" is not a legal exemption. The company you hire matters too. A legitimate security agency holds its own business licence under PSISA, carries insurance, and can show you proof of both. If a provider cannot produce that paperwork, that is a problem, and it is usually the moment a venue or insurer walks away.

This is where a lot of event hosts get caught off guard. Most banquet halls, hotels, and event venues require proof of licensing and insurance before they let a guard set foot on the property. Your own event insurance may require it as well. Showing up with unlicensed security can mean your event gets shut down, your venue contract gets voided, or your coverage does not pay out if something goes wrong.

The practical need depends on your event. A small private dinner is different from a 500 person reception with an open bar. But once you are serving alcohol, charging entry, or running real numbers through the door, licensed security stops being optional and starts being the thing that protects you legally and financially.

If you are not sure what your event requires, the simplest move is to ask a licensed agency directly. A good one will tell you straight what you need and what you do not, instead of overselling you.
